Queerness Definition: the state of being non-normative
Added context from Hanna & Lizzie:
Anything which is not a norm can be said to be queer. It is worth noting that historically, queer was used as a derogatory term to describe a range of sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions of self. Abnormal or queer behavior is often seen as inappropriate simply due to its deviation from the norm. Many humans want to feel safe, and there is safety in predictability. There is safety in rules that everyone follows. When people deviate from the rules, it can be scary or seem threatening. Hence, queer has historically been used as a slur.
However, many have reclaimed this term and now feel empowered using it. Rejecting the norm of monogamy can certainly be described as queer. There is debate as to whether those who identify as nonmonogamous must also identify as queer. We would never force a label onto any particular person, so we are fully accepting of folks who choose to adopt the label of nonmonogamous and not queer. However, we feel personally that being nonmonogamous is part of what makes us queer.
